"So what is this UN business you got going all about, really?"
"So what is this UN business you got going all about, really?" Let me try and answer that. Representing the 10 million members of WAGGGS we are here to share our thoughts and concerns about the #Agenda2030 or now commonly known as #GlobalGoals and advocate for WAGGGS position based on four key messages:
1. What gets measured gets done - we need to look at data disaggregated by gender and age to really be able to measure progress.
2. Invest in girls - rhetorical commitments made to improve girls' situation globally need to be backed up by both programming and funds.
3. Dismantle structural discrimination against girls and the barriers that limit us to reach our full potential - be it access to resources or norms, attitudes and cultural practices.
4. Girls need to be at the table, not on the sidelines. We are experts on our lives, we need not decisions about us made without us, but instead we need to be drivers and agents of change - heard and valued!
So yesterday, at the Civil Society Thought Leaders meeting, I got the chance to elaborate on the last one in an intervention. Having UN Women tweet about it is obviously a great way to spread the message.
And today we'll keep that up when Heads of States are arriving. They will agree on the goals, this historical achievement of years of consultation and negotiation, and by the time they leave, they should all know that we as girl guides and girls scouts are prepared to be part of the implementation of the goals, starting today!
